Guessing Tips

No penalty for wrong answers

AP exams do not deduct points for incorrect answers. Answer every single question, even if you have to guess.

Eliminate first

Cross out obviously wrong choices. Your odds jump from 20% to 33% or 50% instantly.

Watch for absolutes

Answers with words like "always," "never," or "only" are often wrong. Look for nuanced language.

Return to hard questions

Mark questions you're unsure about and circle back if you have time. Don't let one question steal five minutes.

Use the booklet

Cross out choices, underline key numbers, and draw diagrams directly in the test booklet. It helps you think.

Trust your gut

Your first instinct is usually right. Only change an answer if you find clear evidence you made a mistake.

🖩 Calculator Tips

Know your calculator

Practice every function you'll need: derivatives, integrals, roots, logs, and graphing. Don't learn on exam day.

Check mode settings

Make sure you're in radian mode for calculus and physics. A single mode error can cost multiple questions.

Store useful values

Use the storage function to save intermediate results. It reduces transcription errors and saves time.

Graph to verify

If a question asks about roots, maxima, or intersections, graph the function to confirm your algebraic answer.

Fresh batteries

Replace batteries the night before. Bring a backup calculator if your school allows it.

Know what's allowed

Only College Board-approved calculators are permitted. Casio FX-9750, TI-84, and TI-Nspire are safe choices.

🌞 Before the Exam

  • Get 7-8 hours of sleep. Cramming until 2 AM hurts recall more than it helps.
  • Eat a balanced breakfast with protein and complex carbs. Avoid too much sugar.
  • Arrive 15-30 minutes early. Stress from rushing tanks performance.
  • Use the bathroom before checking in. Breaks are short and timed.
  • Do a quick 5-minute confidence review of your formula sheet or top 10 facts.
  • Leave your phone in your car or turned completely off in your bag.

📝 During the Exam

  • Read every question carefully. AP questions often have hidden conditions or exceptions.
  • For FRQs, answer the question that is asked — not the one you wish was asked.
  • Show your work clearly. Partial credit is generous when steps are visible.
  • Use proper units and significant figures where required (especially Chemistry and Physics).
  • If you finish early, review. Check for mis-bubbling and arithmetic errors.
  • Stay calm if a section feels hard. The curve accounts for difficulty.
